Dolphin Pool Cleaner Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
Does A Dolphin Pool Cleaner “learn” My Pool Layout?:
Contrary to popular belief, Dolphin Pool Cleaners (and most other brands on the market) do not “remember” your pool. Instead It performs a new mapping / scanning sequence every cycle it runs using the integrated gyroscopes and mapping algorithms.
Can I leave a Dolphin in the pool all the time?:
Chlorine is the biggest factor when deciding to leave it in vs taking it out. Robotic pool cleaners are much more advanced compared to suction side or pressure side cleaners. They do not need to run every day. Usually depending on the model 2-4 times a week. Dolphins also run based on cycle times (at most 3 hours). With this in mind lets say we have it run for 3 days a week, 3 hour cycles each time. That amounts to 9 hours of working time in your pool. That is 9 hours of harsh chemical exposure that over time degrades the plastics, waterproof seals, and metals on the robot. 9-12 hours a week is not too bad. But if you leave it in the pool all week? That's over 168 hours of chemical exposure. That is a huge difference that will seriously impact your robots lifespan.
We usually see cleaners (no matter the brand) last 1-3 years when constantly left in. Compare that to cleaners that are taken out and used within the chemical guidelines mentioned above we usually see 5-7!. That is a huge difference worth considering. Now you may ask yourself “well why does it have a scheduling feature”? The answer to that is that the scheduling was originally there for when you were going to be away from home. That way you can have the cleaner clean a bit while you're gone. It wasn't meant to be used all the time.
What are the Chemical levels I should be aware of when operating a Dolphin Pool Cleaner?:
Dolphin has certain Chemical level guidelines that they include in their manual, Here they are:
Chlorine Max: 4 PPM
pH 7.0-7.8 PPM
Temperature 6-35°C / 43-95°F (below 15°C / 59°F climbing performance may be affected)
NaCl Maximum = 5000 PPM
These guidelines are important. The most important factor is the chlorine level. Based on the 4 ppm (parts per million) limit you really don't want to run the robot when doing any pool shock treatments as when you shock your chlorine will usually spike above that limit for a bit.
“Does the Dolphin cable tangle” or “Why is my Dolphin cable tangled”?:
Any robotic pool cleaner cable can get “memory kinks” or tangled over time if they aren't properly taken care of. Even with a swivel to help avoid tangling if the cable is “neglected” long enough it will overpower the swivel anyway. We recommend that you unplug the cable from the power supply box after each use and coil it neatly by hand how it came in the box. If you do this you are effectively doing 2 things. You're releasing / resetting the tangling pressure build up that started during that cycle, and you're reminding the cable of how it should be which is nice and neatly circled (not tangled).
We see cords become a mess when these two things are not done as well as when the cable is constantly in the pool getting deteriorated by the chlorine and other harsh chemicals over time. If your cable is ever a white and chalky, or sticky it's usually a sign that the chlorine has had way too much time to eat at the cord. This is normal to see around the 5-6 year mark but if it's happening sooner that's a sign your chlorine levels or the amount of time it has been in the pool is affecting the longevity of the Dolphin robot.
What is Pelican’s (Pelicanshops1.com) Enhanced Warranty:
The enhanced warranty Pelicanshops1.com offers on most Dolphin Pool Cleaners ADDS onto the normal Dolphin warranty. The Normal Dolphin warranty only covers parts and labor when sent to Maytronics (NOT SHIPPING) and when brought to a local shop only covers parts depending on each store. Pelicanshops1.com ADDS onto the warranty and covers SHIPPING costs, LABOR costs, and also fixes the units at a faster time frame during the season due to having the parts on hand to fix the unit. We do not need to wait on most parts to arrive from the dolphin to fix the unit.
What is the difference between Dolphin’s “Ultra Fine Filters” and “Nano Filters”?:
Dolphin actually does not have “NANO FILTERS” ; they are a made up term by certain sellers that make it seem like they have something different than the others. In reality NANO filters are what Dolphin calls their “ultra fine filters” in other words Nano filters = Ultra fine filters. Certain Buzzwords like this are the cause of a lot of confusion for potential buyers. Another example is “maxbin” technology. Certain sellers will try to make it seem like the models they sell have a larger basket by calling it a “Maxbin” basket when in reality IT'S THE SAME SIZE and part number dolphin basket. There is no such thing as a “Maxbin”.
Can I use an extension cord to power my Dolphin Pool Cleaner?:
Dolphin recommends not to use an extension cord as it can cause damage to the motor and power supply over time due to voltage drops. It is also a safety risk having the cord be so close to the pool. However if you need to use one they recommend to use the shortest cord needed and to make sure its a heavy duty outdoor rated cord.
What is the longevity of a Dolphin Pool Cleaner or a Robotic pool cleaner in general?:
We see two different lifespans depending on how the cleaner is taken care of. If the Dolphin pool cleaner is left in the pool all the time and constantly exposed to chlorine or any other harsh chemical (yes salt pools still have this effect over time as well) we usually see a 2-3 year time period before the robot needs something replaced. This is due to the harsh chemicals breaking down parts over time. However we see a huge difference when you take care and avoid leaving it in all the time with a huge increase up to 5-7 years on average. It's even possible to see people get 10 plus years out of a Dolphin if the proper care is taken!

Which Dolphin pool cleaner is best for my pool?:
There are some key questions you can ask yourself to help get to an answer.
How large is my pool? How deep is it? If it's on the larger side a 3 motor option (2 drive motors, 1 stronger pump motor) might be the more efficient route. Less cycles needed to get a pool clean, Less cycles needed throughout the week to keep that pool clean compared to a 2 motor unit (1 drive motor, 1 pump motor).
Do I want a basket design which is the most convenient design Dolphin makes or can I get away with a Cartridge design? Do I mind spending more time cleaning out and taking the cartridges apart and back together or Do I want the simplicity of the basket?
Do you want a 2 year warranty or a 3 year warranty? Usually 2 motor units have a 2 year warranty while the 3 motor units have a 3 year warranty (there are some exceptions).
How much do you want to spend?
Where do you want to buy from? Do you want to buy from Amazon, a big box store, a dropshipper who doesn't know the product, or do you want to buy from a store who knows the product and services it? Usually pool store models like the S2000, M550, or M600 have added warranties, rebate savings, or features in box compared to online models so its always best to shop at stores like us (Pelicanshops1.com) or a local pool store who knows the product or at least SERVICES IT a lot of top websites don't bother helping you once they make the sale, which is something to consider.
Once you have answers to these types of questions you can then use them to look at our comparison chart (https://pelicanshops1.com/pages/dolphin-comparison-info) to help narrow down your options!
Corded Robotic Pool Cleaners Vs Cordless Robotic Pool Cleaners?:
As of now corded cleaners are definiltey more consistent and powerful compared to cordless. Each have their trade offs and benefits but as it stands now the benefits of corded outweigh the benefits of cordless. Yes, you don't need to worry about the cable on a cordless cleaner however now you need to worry about long charge times, a heavier cleaner, battery life concerns, chargers, and an overall weaker cleaner. We only recommend cordless cleaners as a way to maintain a smaller in ground pool. Using one to clean a larger pool is tedious as it will take numerous cycles and charging sessions to get the pool clean vs simple back to back cycles on a stronger corded cleaner with no charge times.
